Blues Manager Maresca Dismisses Man City Links as Pure Rumour
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded recent talk connecting him with a move to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The 45-year-old, who once served as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea boss in June 2024, is under contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a potential extra year option.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is no time for these kind of things."
He went on to explain, Primarily, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my focus, I have stated many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was linked with a role in Italy with Juventus. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the Premier League, are set to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.
Strain Following Recent Remarks
Maresca's most recent statement follow after he described a recent two-day spell as his most difficult since joining Chelsea.
Those original words had sparked widespread speculation of a possible rift between the manager and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When pressed if he had since spoken with the Chelsea's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same facility, so we talk about various topics. But about the post-Everton media session, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would "absolutely" stay at the club for the coming campaign and called on supporters to keep backing the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that injured attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, potentially available for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: An 'Open Wound'
The apparent disconnect between Maresca and the club's hierarchy remains as an unhealed issue that still create unease.
While there has been no further escalation of the situation publicly, there has equally been no apology forthcoming, creating the matter unaddressed.
The atmosphere during the manager's press conferences has become notably strained, raising fears it could undermine what has up to now been a decent beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's sporting position is positive: they are in the top four in the Premier League, have qualified for the Carabao Cup last four, and can secure a better European position with strong performances in their final games.
The lingering uncertainty is whether this behind-the-scenes dynamic might begin to disrupt a squad that was beginning to appear cohesive.
