Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
